A1A - THE BAND

Atlanta, GA

**************
a1alogo
Jeff Pike and Scott Nickerson, two of the most talented and entertaining musicians around, have taken America and the Caribbean by storm for the past several years. The two met in 1989 and formed a close friendship through their mutual love of Jimmy Buffett's music. Both had professional backgrounds in music and performance, and it was evident early on that they both knew most of Jimmy's songs. This led to the formation of The ORIGINAL Jimmy Buffett Tribute Show, A1A. They were the first band ever to put on a high-energy, four-hour show comprised of nothing but Buffett's best songs, spanning every era of his career.

A1A is comprised of Jeff Pike (lead vocals, guitars and sequences) and Scott Nickerson (Drums, percussion, Hohner harmonicas, and vocals).

A1A won a national "Buffett Sound Alike Contest" sponsored by Jimmy's label, Margaritaville Records, in 1992. In 1995, Jeff won a "Best Guitarist" contest and played onstage with Jimmy during the Domino College show in Atlanta. Years of hard work and fun finally led to A1A's close association with some of the musicians in Buffett's band, and many top-notch opportunities all over the country.

A1A has played many respected venues across the country, including the Margaritaville Cafes in Key West and New Orleans; Sloppy Joe's in Atlanta, Miami, Orlando and Key West; Foxy's on Jost van Dyke; Carlos 'n' Charlie's in Cozumel; plus a long resume of concerts, corporate and festival events including the Annual Parrot Head Conventions and a variety of cruises and corporate shows in the Caribbean!

A1A is frequently joined onstage in New Orleans or Key West during the annual parrot head conventions by members of Jimmy Buffett's own band: harmonica master, Greg "Fingers" Taylor; Coral Reefer Band Music Director and keyboardist, Michael Utley; and steel drum virtuoso, Robert Greenidge. Scott occasionally sits in on harmonica and percussion with Peter Mayer, Jimmy's guitarist at various locations. Fingers Taylor frequently joins A1A for larger festival and corporate shows as the "honorary" third member. Jimmy's bandmates and business associates regularly refer A1A to clients looking for the #1 Buffett Tribute Show in the nation. What better reference roster could you ask for?

AIR MARGARITAVILLE

Detroit, MI

**************

Mike and J.D. have been fans of Jimmy Buffett for what seems like forever. "I can remember seeing him at Florida State University when I was a student there," says J.D. "Being from Florida has always made me feel part of the music, I guess." Mike agrees, "His songs say so much. The ocean, the sun, the fun and the lifestyle a lot of us would lead if we had the chance. Or the courage." There is no questio that a lot of other folks in this area feel the same way. Dressed in tropical shirts, bermuda shorts, island hats and other beach togs, fans transform into Parrotheads during Jimmy Buffett's concerts and escape to Margaritaville. The music with influences from New Orleans, Key West, and the Caribbean, conjures up images of a laid-back island life style of friends, frozen drinks, and beach parties. There is nothing quite like experiencing a Jimmy Buffett concert. That is if you're lucky enough to get tickets. Buffett has cut down his tour dates and this years concerts were sold out in minutes. What's a Parrothead to do?...................

In 1992 they formed Air Margaritavlle. Playing Jimmy's style of Caribbean Soul they struck a chord with Parrotheads throughout the Midwest. Dennis Farac (steel drum, keyboard, guitar, and vocals) joined them in 1996 adding the right spice to these already tasty tunes. From songs Parrotheads know by heart like Cheeseburger in Paradise, Fins, and Volcano to Buffett's classic covers of Brown Eyed Girl and Jamaica Farewell, it is impossible to stand still without feeling the urge to dance and sing along. Their audiences take on the flavor of carnival as people, dressed in their finest parrotphernalia, take a break from their computers and fax machines to a relaxed but exciting world of boats, beaches, bars and ballads. Air Margaritaville bills their summer shows as part of their "No Ticket/No Problem Tour."

Backed by The Chameleon Caravan with Charlie Salaz (bass), Marty Kane (drums), Mel Diaz (percussion), and Tom McGovern (harmonica), they have played to thousands of Buffett fans throughout the Midwest and the United States. They are regular guests on the Mitch Albom Radio Show broadcast throughout the Great Lakes and syndicated throughout the U.S.

Fly Air Margaritaville and enjoy Parrothead Madness all year long!!

B2B - THE BAND

Richmond, VA

**************
B2BLogo
B2B is a Jimmy Buffett Tribute band located in Richmond, Virginia. Four of the five band members are also long standing members of the Parrot Head Club of Richmond. The fifth member, Craig, has since been converted and is also now a member of the club.

B2B's main musical inspiration, of course, is Jimmy Buffett, but they also play a wide variety of music that ranges from Charlie Daniels to The Beach Boys. B2B also has a talented pool of song writers and have penned several original tunes that range in subject from spending a little time at the "Rivah" to dealing with such topical items as "Viagra".

The main ingredient in any B2B performance is the same laid back, tropical attitude that Jimmy Buffett displays whenever he performs, so pour yourself a margarita or pop the top on a bottle of Corona, kick off your shoes and you will find yourself "wasting away in Margaritaville".

ROGER BARTLETT

New York, NY

**************
hellskitchen
Roger Bartlett does a lot of things.

First of all he is a songwriter and guitarist. Leading his band, Hell's Kitchen, he is also a vocalist. The band has a new CD, City Streets, with mp3 files that you can download to sample their brand of the blues.

Roger also writes and produces music for TV sports and jingles. He has done theme music for the Charlotte Hornets, College Basketball, NASCAR Today, Big East Basketball and many others. You can listen to a short collection of his greatest commercial themes at his web site.

Roger also does the occasional movie. He did music for the movie, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", and music for that drive-in favorite, "Incoming Freshmen". He also sang and played on the soundtrack for the movie "Rancho Deluxe" when he was lead guitarist for Jimmy Buffett.

Oh yeah, Jimmy Buffett. Did I mention that Roger was the original lead guitarist in the Coral Reefer Band? Along with Fingers Taylor, who is still a Coral Reefer, Roger helped form the core of the band. Roger went on to earn two platinum and one gold record for his work as a Reefer.

CHRIS BELLAMY

Wilmington, NC

**************
bellamy
Wilmington's own Chris Bellamy was nominated for a production Emmy recently for a song he wrote that was used in the PBS documentary, "Lumina, Remembering the Light." Bellamy didn't win the Emmy Sept. 12, but the nomination has brought him some well deserved attention.

He has released four records and has managed to sell close to 100,000 CDs of his own music, an amazing amount for an independent artist. His new CD, "Blue Water World," features 14 songs that capture the essence of living near the water. The title track is a beachy, jazzy tune about a fishing trip he took off Cape Hatteras.

"Fishing is a lot like life" he says, "sometimes the best things in life can get away from you and you don't know why."

Mr. Bellamy received his first big break in the 1970s when he was opening for up-and-coming national acts at The Pier nightclub in Raleigh. He shared the stage with groups like the Nitty Gritty Dirt band and songwriters like Willie Nelson. He really hit it off with a guy named Jimmy Buffett. "Jimmy Buffett was driving a Chevrolet with a trailer on it but that was a long time ago" said Bellamy.

Like Buffett, Chris Bellamy enjoys writing different styles of music. His song, "God Looks After Drunk Sailors, Guitar Players and Fools" has a country flair and showcases Jack Ketner on pedal steel guitar.

Like Jimmy Buffett, Chris Bellamy loves the sea. There are other similarities to the famous seafaring singer, namely country vocals and Caribbean rhythms.

Buffett, however, doesn't often use a jazz guitarist, and that's what gives "Blue Water World" a unique wrinkle. Bobby Russell brightens several tunes with his light touch, and so does Jack Ketner on pedal steel.

Bellamy's lyrics strike a familiar ground. "The Pirate Song" recounts the exploits of Blackbeard, while "Lumina" waxes nostalgic about old Wrightsville Beach.

Parrotheads should find "Blue Water World" as pleasing as a moonlit sail.

Reggae, TropRock, Gulf & Western, Gumbo Rock and a bit of Country....steel drums to twangy guitar to jazz clarinet....The debut CD by the enigmatic New Orleans singer/songwriter Joe Bennett has it all....different ingredients all combined like a big pot of gumbo to produce a delicious offering.

Backed by the tight arrangements of his Pirates Of The Vieux Carre, Bennett at times sounds like Jimmy Buffett, Dr. John, Jerry Jeff Walker and even Harry Connick, Jr. All in all, this CD is a delightful mix of musical styles that really show the range of Joe Bennett's smokey voice. God, I LOVE this CD!!!!

He's a regular at Ms. Pam Fortner's Tropical Isle in the French Quarter and I guarantee that "Fifty Dollar Treasure Map" will be a regular in your CD player!!

H.B. BEVERLY

Bristol, VA

**************
H.G. Beverly
Being the only male student from his high school to have majored in Chorus, H.B. was showing at an early age that he knew what his calling was to be - singing! Over the next fifteen year, he patiently worked on putting in his time on a craft that he knew would someday reward him for his dedication. After opening for Bristol native, David Loggins, ("Please Come to Boston,") and being told to "go for it," he hasn't looked back since, finally making performing and writing music his full-time job.

H.B. Beverly's main influences include the Folk/Rock sounds of James Taylor, Jimmy Buffet, John Prine, & Jerry Jeff Walker, the Jersey Shore rock of Bruce Springsteen & Southside Johnny, and the Memphis sounds of Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis, & Isaac Hayes.

Twenty years, thousands of performances and a wildly popular CD later, Beverly still uses these influences to entertain his audiences today, as evidenced by a recent "Weekly Washboard" review:

"We don't usually move in the circle that makes up the crowd H.B. Beverly plays to, but we went and saw him anyway on the deck at Shoeless Joe's. It turned out to be a night of nice surprises."

"First, we were surprised to find Donny Eaves, the keyboardist for Janie Grey, playing with H.B., who was clad in a black tank-top, Bermuda shorts, and flip-flops. After listening to Beverly play for a little while, I got the impression that he dresses like that, no matter what the weather or the season. It was just the two of them, playing together, and they drank Miller Lite between riffs."

"I'm not much of a Jimmy Buffet fan, and I hate to compare Beverly to Buffet, since I'm sure that most reviewers do, but talent is talent, and it cannot be denied that H.B. Beverly is a talented musician. He plays beach music, and he gets his crowd moving."

"At the show we went to, it was apparent that most of the people had come to Shoeless Joe's specifically to see him. The crowd was good; there wasn't a face in the crowd that wan't smiling, as they sang and danced to every song H.B. played. Every once in a while a conga line would break out and we were pulled out of our seats and into the crowd, which was spilling off of the deck."

"H.B. creates a very laid back atmosphere to play in. The only thing that was seperating he and Donny was their instruments. Everyone on the deck knew the words to just about every song H.B. played, and although we didn't, we were taken in and treated with familiar friendliness."

"So, if you are looking for a party and some really well-played, feet in the sand, frozen drink in the hand music, then H.B. Beverly is a sure bet. His fans are cool and unassuming and he gets a good time rolling. I think it probably follows him around......."

JONATHAN BIRCHFIELD

Conover, NC

**************
jbirchfield
Vocalist, singer-songwriter, and accomplished guitarist Jonathan Birchfield has spent the last twelve years steadily establishing himself as a performer and artist in the acoustic world up and down the east coast.

From NYC to Key West, FL, Jonathan has built a following of avid listeners for his heart-felt original music. Having just released his second CD, "All Points in Between," Jonathan is looking forward to taking his music on the road and sharing his personable style with people all over the country.

Jonathan comes from Conover NC, a small town in the shadows of the Appalachian Mountains. In these shadows he found his love for acoustic music. With distant relatives playing mountain music just across the NC line in Roan Mountain TN, you can hear the music running through his veins. His passion for the mountains has been a huge inspiration for many of his tunes.

The electric guitar was his main instrument for the first half of his career, but the acoustic roots ran deep. Heavily influenced by great artists such as James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Lyle Lovett, and North Carolina native Dave Wilcox, his dynamic voice and use of different tunings create a style that is uniquely Jonathan Birchfield. His songs are written about real places, real people, and are truly from the heart.

THE BLUE STEEL THROBBERS

Tucson, AZ

**************
bluesteel2
Born and raised in Greenwood, Mississippi, John Henry Milner, Jr. began his musical career playing drums in the marching band in Junior High and High School, but discovered guitar in his junior year. The next logical step was to form a band, "The Sweet Nothings", with Joe Seawright and Joe Correro, Jr., and they played local high school and college parties. After graduation, John went off to the US Naval Academy, and played snare drum in the Drum & Bugle Corps, and also guitar and drums in the official USNA rock band, The Spiffys, that made two Rock 'n' Roll LPs in 1967 and 1968

Once his Navy tour of duty was up in 1978, John became a partner/owner of The Upper Crust, a restaurant/saloon in Upland, California, where he performed classic country and folk every Friday and Saturday night for five years. However, like most musicians, he kept his day job as an engineer to pay the mortgages, etc. until The Upper Crust closed in 1983.

In August 1998, John's day job transferred him to Tucson where he formed Blue Steel Throbbers with Jim Gates whom he'd known since the late 1980's in Southern California.

John is featured on vocals and plays a Washburn EA-20 6-string acoustic guitar.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Born in Victoria, Texas and raised in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, James Austin Gates, Jr. began by playing lead guitar with several rock bands in the central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland area. Some of these included Silver City, Scarlet Fever, and The Pikers. The 1970's disco era was a dismal one for rock music, so Jim bought his first Teac multitrack recorder in 1978 and gave up public performing to concentrate on his home recording studio.
Jim graduated from Penn State in 1985 where he teamed up with longtime partner Bob Klein on several multitrack sessions over the years. Through Klein, Jim was introduced to Andy Rathgeber and later Tim Kolberg both from Baltimore, Maryland and the acoustic trio "Triptych" was formed. The group was one step ahead of the current Celtic craze, and in addition to solo guitar sets from each of the group members, the three teamed up for an instrumental Celtic set with guitar (Tim), lap dulcimer (Andy), and mandolin (Jim).
Having worked in Southern California, and Baltimore, Jim's day gig transferred him to Tucson, Arizona in 1995. In July 1998, he formed Blue Steel Throbbers with John Milner who he'd known since the late 1980's in Southern California.
With Blue Steel Throbbers, Jim is featured on vocals and plays a Martin SP000C-16R 6-string acoustic, 1966 Danelectro Convertible 6-string, 1999 Danelectro 12-string, and Weber "Absaroka" model mandolin.
The Blue Steel Throbbers, favorites of the Arizona PHC, play an eclectic mix of Acoustic Folk, Rock, Blues, Original and Traditional tunes.
DARREN BROWN
"The RayBan Man"
Fenton, MI
**************
RayBanMan
Most club performers have roughly 3 1/2 minutes -the average length of a song - to convince an audience to stay and listen a little longer. If patrons aren't familiar with the music being performed, if they can't hum along or anticipate the next line of lyric, the challenge is multiplied tenfold.
In the past 13 years, Fenton singer-guitarist-songwriter Darren Phillip Brown has become adept at finding audiences and acceptance for the pop and country songs he writes. A typical night on the club circuit finds him yielding almost as many requests for his original music as he gets for more widely recognized radio fare.
Darren's music depicts stories of rebels and back roads, people being lost in the 90's and, of course, love too. Barroom sing-a-longs like, "Raise Your Glass", "Folks Like You," "The Ray Ban Man" and "Soda Pop & Lollipops" lay a solid foundation for his one on one relationship with the audience.
Inspired by acts as diverse as Jimmy Buffett, the Rolling Stones and Garth Brooks, Darren is cooking up a new recipe of music, a sonic gumbo, if you will. He calls it ACOUSTIC MIDWESTERN. Blend in one of the largest repertoires of cover songs in Michigan and voila!...you have Darren Phillip Brown ....entertaining - eclectic - energetic.
His solo career was launched in Florida where he spent most of his time entertaining tourists in Panama City Beach, Pensacola and St. George Island and has been highlighted by opening for Wayne Carson (he wrote The Letter and You Were Always On My Mind ). Since then his musical journey has landed him jobs in Georgia, Alabama, Arizona, Illinois and Michigan, where he appeared on WCEN -Mt. Pleasant, MI with Brownsville Station founder and Ted Nugent bassist Mike Lutz. Most recently he was included on the Silver Lake Records compilation CD, "Michigan Songwriters, Volume I."
Brent Burns is a songwriter, singer, guitarist, and performer based out of Gulf Shores, Alabama. His latest CD, "Livin' The Life (Jimmy Buffett Only Wrote About)" features ten original songs, This CD is a little taste of paradise from one of the Gulf Coast's favorite entertainers.
Enough from me, I'll let Brent tell you a little more about it:
"Well folks, it's another day in paradise. 2000 was great and I thank you all for your support and encouragement. After a ten year writers block, I'm at it again!
A ten year block for a writer is more like a near death experience. As I started writing songs to take to Nashville, something happened. Songs about living at the beach started to pop out. Titles like: "Livin' the Life (Jimmy Buffett Only Wrote About)", "If It's Snowbird Season, Why Can't We Shoot 'Em?", "Neon Tan", "Little Grass Hut", "Vacation", "Too Lazy To Work, Too Nervous To Steal", "Aloha Betty", and more. CAPTAIN QUINT
Baltimore, MD
**************
Quint
Founding member, Kevin Johnston, has assembled some of the best musical talent in the area to create what some are calling the Premier Jimmy Buffett Band on the East Coast Captain Quint is serving up Beach Music Buffett Style in and around the area to rave revues.
Lead Vocalist (and unofficial drink tester), Michael Philip is at the helm with his unique blend of witty humor and unabashed charm. Though Mikes voice can accommodate virtually any musical genre, its the Buffett that keeps em screaming for more. Philips voice is Jimmy Buffett personified. From the laid back sounds of Twelve Volt Man and Pirate Looks at Forty to the reckless Caribbean abandoned style of Weather is Here and Coconut Telegraph Philips hits all the highs and lows and even the in between.
Lead guitarist, Steve Weeb Fauth lights up the guitar solos with his own southpaw style and he is there on the Buffett too, with all those signature guitar licks and some great harmony vocals.
They call him Shrimper Ken thats right Ken Polcak is the bass man minus the bad fall. Hes the glue that keeps it all together for the entire captain and crew with his rock solid bottom lines and fills.
The legendary Dennis Don-freakin-Ho Buchholz keeps the music a flowin on his acoustic guitar. Dennis has been known to strum a few John Prine tunes along the way and when Philip and Buchholz are joined by the Sandman for the now infamous acoustical set, the Early Buffett Years seem to magically come back to life live when Quint starts to play.
Kevin KJ Johnston fits the bill on the keys. He never moved to England to play the Piano....but maybe he should have. Kevin holds down the piano, Hammond and steel drum lines on the keyboards, while his distinct programming style brings the full Buffett sound to life, live on stage, giving Quint an extremely full sound that is second to none. Marimbas, Kalimbashes playin steel drums........Its all there.
The icing on this Quint Cake comes in the form of our own Harpoon Man legendary harmonica player, Stephen The Sandman Sandkuhler. With too many accolades to mention, the Sandman certainly brought the ear candy to THIS party!! See why Quint is moving forward full speed ahead. Sandkuhler hails from his earlier musical routes with the Baltimore based Off the Wall and has even brought a few goodies along with him, like Quints version of Off the Walls Ground Zero As if this werent enough, Stephen breaks out the flute for some great arrangements on "One Particular Harbor," "Only Time Will Tell" and "Another Saturday Night."
CaribCowboys
The Caribbean Cowboys are one of the most popular party-bands wherever they go! With this versatile four-piece group based in Asheville, NC, you can turn your get-together or special occasion into a fun time for all!
Steve Weams, founder and leader of the Caribbean Cowboys, is a self-proclaimed minister of the gospel of Jimmy Buffett, and nowhere will you find a more committed or dedicated Parrothead on the face of our planet! Steve has been entertaining people around the Southeast for many years and is especially adept at getting audiences to participate in the party-at-hand. When you arrange for the Caribbean Cowboys as your entertainment-of-choice you can be sure that Steve will have everyone up and moving!
Matt Sluder is probably the most proficient musician of the Caribbean Cowboys. Also in great demand locally as a studio guitarist and instructor, Matt grew up listening to the classic sounds of Eric Clapton, the Allman Brothers Band, Jimmy Hendrix, Santana, and Mark Knopfler to name a few. Matt later attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston where he learned to appreciate early blues greats such as Freddie King and Robert Johnson. His awe-inspiring licks on the guitar are matched by his impressive vocal ability.
Rick Phillips holds down the bass line for the Cowboys. Rick has made the rounds as bass player and vocalist in southern rock bars and clubs around the Southeast and also toured with road bands at traditional country nightclubs around the South and Mid-West. His twenty years of experience are apparent when you walk into a room where the Caribbean Cowboys are cranked up.
Jack Nitterauer lays down the back-beat for the Caribbean Cowboys. In great demand as a percussionist, Jack's dedication and professionalism are well-known and his ability on drums and vocals are an invaluable contribution to the whole package that is......the Caribbean Cowboys!
Not only do Steve and the band perform almost every Jimmy Buffett song you might know, they can also treat audiences to a healthy dose of classic rock, rhythm & blues, oldies-but-goodies, and plenty of your favorite tunes that everyone likes to listen and dance to. If you love to dance, come prepared to shag the night away at a Caribbean Cowboys event near you!
Brent started the group with his college buddy, Jimmy Branson in February 1989. He had an idea of having a band without a band, several years before sequencers & karaoke machines became popular...or, at the least, well-known to the public and entertainment world.
The genesis of the group came to me while watching the Temptations perform on the Johnny Carson Show late one night in 1988. The Temps were singing and moving, only microphones & mic stands in front of themno band behind them (the band was always off-camera to the right of the stage) & I thought how great it would be to perform the Motown songs, beach music, caribbean tunes, everything that I loved to sing and have the music pre-recorded, somehowjust singing and choreography without a live band.
With the help of a well-established group from Raleigh, NC known as the Embers, Brents idea became a reality. He and Jimmy began performing throughout North Carolina with their music tracks, their "sequences", to the delight of festival crowds and bar patrons.
Jimmy and I would perform Sam & Dave stuff, Righteous Brothers, Temptations, Four Tops and anything by Jimmy Buffettthe crowd loved it and we were getting paid pretty good for a couple of college students who really didnt know how long this could last. It was just fun and allowed us the opportunity to go throughout the state and meet really great people who loved beach music presented in a slightly different way."
The concept snowballedtwo guys added a girlthen anothersoon the group had a well-established circuit to travel and a reputation for singing their hearts out to entertain a crowd.
Now, 12 years later its a dream come truea dream that doesnt stop.
I thought every year would be the last, but the phone kept ringing. Then the requests for cassettes and compact discs by the shellheads brought about songs and recordings that got airplay by beach music disc jockeys & great reviews by people in the beach business. Its still overwhelming to me. Man, did I surprise my high school guidance counselors!
I feel very fortunate to have the shellheads and to still be performing after this long a time. We are very blessed as a group...we write & produce our own material...we have received airplay on radio stations from Virginia to Florida...we have performed from Washington, DC to Cozomel, Mexico...met so many great entertainers and stars along the way...what can I say, I love my job!"
I started playing guitar while in Troy, Michigan during the late 60's. I remember playing a dance at Baker Junior High School with a band before moving to Ocean City, N.J. in 1969. So I've been playing the guitar for well over 30 years.
I've been a professional musician since 1975 when I started playing around the south Jersey area with Graham Harper as a duo. We played in Wildwood a lot and we were the most booked act during the bicenntenial celebrations in Philadelphia, 1976. That was a great summer, and it was a lot of fun to be associated with 76 Inc.. After a few years and moving to Florida, I performed as a solo artist between Ft. Lauderdale and Miami.
In 1982 I joined a newly formed band (Paradize) in Key West. We were a 4 piece dance band. Luis Vega (on bass guitar) and C.J. Barr (on drums) brought me in from Hollywood, FL and Frankie Z (Zangari) (on keyboards) in from S. Jersey.
We played in Key West for a year before relocating to Warner Robins, GA. Talk about culture shock, from gay-ville to redneck-ville. The job in Georgia didn't last long so Paradize started playing on the road. We wound up doing a Key Largo, Naples, Gainsville circuit.When the band broke up in 1985, Frankie and I stayed in Naples and started performing as a duo.
We performed in quite a few different restaurants and clubs in the Naples area, and we were one of the first acts to perform at the new Ritz Carlton. Then the owners of O'Shea's Rest. on Marco Island saw us playing at the Ritz and just had to have us as their house band. We were there for three years.
After performing with Frankie for 7 years, I decided to go solo again since there were a lot of gigs for solo entertainers in the Naples, Marco area. I played at the Naples Beach Hotel and the Snook Inn on Marco. Then I answered a want ad auditioning entertainers for the Marriott on Marco. I got the job and have been performing at Quinn's on the Beach since 1991. It's been a great job. Usually you have to change locations to stay fresh and not have the audience get burnt out on your music. It's the opposite at Quinn's. The audience changes every few days, and when they come back they hope to still see you there.
The sun is shining. The ocean is glistening. The waves are gently lapping the shore. The birds are darting back and forth as the tide moves up and down on the sand. The sounds of the Caribbean are wafting from a pub along the seawall. Am I in Bermuda, Jamaica, on maybe the Keys?
No. I cant be. The snow is piled up on the side of the street 8 feet high. The wind chill brings the temperature down somewhere in the vicinity of 30 degrees. Im wearing my L.L. Bean mucklucks and a hat that goes down to my shoulders. Im here in northern New England and Im on my way to hear the Corona Brothers, Maines answer to curing cabin fever.
The heart of the Corona Brothers is the duo "Rog & Ray," two souls who have taken it upon themselves to keep the short New England summers alive by putting together a band that breathes warm summer breezes into our Arctic freezes. The 5 piece band has been entertaining audiences for 8 years with their blend of Buffet and Belafonte and both Caribbean and Californian beach music, and rock & roll.
The line-up also includes some of Maines finest musicians. Ben Ray Jones on guitar and flute, Mike Biolard on bass and Ron Bouffard on drums. Ray plays conga, guitar, flute, and a number of percussive instruments that he has collected over the years. Rog plays both electric and acoustic guitar as well as keyboards. The stage is adorned with pink flamingoes, palm trees, and all type of decorations that makes one feel as if one should be ordering daiquiris and making sure that ones supply of sun tan lotion is well stocked.
Its not uncommon to hang up your parka and jump into a conga line that is winding its way through the pub. The Corona Brothers supply a number of percussive instruments that help every person get into the warm weather mood.
If you're in the Northern New England area and are looking for some truly warm entertainment, check out the Corona Brothers.
PAT DAILEY
Put In Bay, OH
**************
patdailey
Patrick Huston Dailey left his hometown of St. Louis in 1959 to pursue a musical career. His profession took him to such places as Hawaii, San Francisco, Chicago and Cleveland. Dailey played a weekend at Put-In-Bay in the summer of 1978 and knew instantly that it was the place for him. The following summer he was booked for the full season at the Beer Barrel Saloon. The summer of 2000 will be Dailey's 20th season at Put-In-Bay. "Three solid months in one place for a road musician is a rough go," said Dailey, "but all of a sudden I found myself writing songs all about fishing and boating. Before I was just writing songs about traveling down that long and lonesome highway All of a sudden I had an identity I love to boat, I love fishing, and I love the lakes."
Dailey has kept audiences along the North Coast smiling and singing for more than 20 years. His raspy voice and rollicking party style has made him a permanent fixture at nightspots on the islands and along the Lake Erie coastline from Michigan to Pennsylvania. His musical love affair with all of the Great Lakes and the Florida Keys has cultivated a loyal and spirited following of boaters, fishermen and fun-loving folks nationwide. Song titles such as "Big Money Walleye," "Underneath the Blue Catawba Moon," "When the Heartland Meets the Bay," "Walleye Willie and Sea Bass Sally," "Island Fever," and his theme song, "Put-In-Bay" are an indication of how he has become a true Great Lakes troubadour. Dailey co-writes some of his songs with his friend, Shel Silverstein, creator of 'A Light in the Attic," "The Unicorn Song, " (made famous by the Irish Rovers), and 'A Boy Named Sue," (recorded by Johnny Cash.)
While there may be a few serious moments in each Dailey performance, the often "bawdy and bombastic" entertainer is best known for his sassy saloon style and his "feel-good, get-happy" message. His personality alone turns a performance into a giant party. On stage, Dailey's "costume" consists of his trademark white walleye-decorated cap, white t-shirt, chino pants or blue jeans, tennis shoes, and a heavily electrified 12-string guitar. An evening with Pat Dailey is guaranteed to be an exhilarating and exhausting night of great music and fun!
Leo has been a musician most of his grown up life, uh, make that, his adult life. The beginnings were oddly named teenaged bands with more thought to the odd names than to the melody, but this too, over time changed and with teenagers of his own, a fork in the road and a sucessful career, the pull of the music became too great and a new career was born.
The Parrothead lifestyle, the music of the Islands and the newly formed Southerneze Parrothead club was an immediate and profound attraction and Bubba's music was a mantra for untold numbers of baby boomers, generation x'ers and everyone in between.
And so here we go, flat out and full tilt with Parrots on our shirts and an AARP card in our wallet, the last half promises to be the best yet because we are, fer sure:
HUGO DUARTE
Kingston Springs, TN
**************
hugo
There are a handful of bands that are island legacies, people who have graced our stages for many years and given us their best. Hugo Duarte and the Full Sail Band are among those few. The band has gone through many incarnations to reach its present membership, which appears to be permanent. Hugo Duarte is a marvelous talent as a vocalist and songwriter, and plays fine acoustic guitar. The current band lineup consists of Ross Sermons on bass, percussionist "Big G" Gelinas, Randy Morrow & Mark Weaver on drums, and Woody Jenkins on lead guitar. Hugo's current album, "Places Along The Road" was produced in Nashville by Larry Lee and features the regular band members plus Bobby Donaldson, Bill Cuomo, Larry Lee, Mark Weaver, Tim Carter, Tim Lorsch, Kathy Burdick and Thom Flora.
I went to Hog's Breath to find a full house on a Monday night. It's always that way when Hugo and Full Sail are in town. Scott Kirby, who had played the early shift hung around to listen. They began with "Another Day In Paradise," a fine ballad that shows off Hugo's smooth vocals. George Turner and Din Allen may be the best back-up singers in the business. Their harmony was CSN quality all the way. Chris and George played a couple of great harmony guitar lines, and traded off leads with Chris playing a sweet high sound and George smoking a low toned lead. What a great way to start!
Next we heard a Duarte tune from the CD. "Reckless Lovin"' makes the CD worth the price. This is a funky ditty with fantastic playing and a wonderful lyric with lines like, "She ain't got no brakes on her heart." "Cutie" is a song about the days of the nude beach at the PierHouse. Remember that? This one has a Carribean feel that lets'G' shine. Everybody loved it. An old friend and fan of Hugo's asked for one of Jimmy's tunes Hugo used to play for him. He began "The Captain and the Kid" alone with his acoustic guitar and sweet vocal charming us all, and the lead guitars slipping in. Lovely. Then Hugo broke a string, and asked Chris Clifton to play something while he changed it. Play he did, Jimi Hendrix's legendary "Little Wing." Chris sang it and played it just the way you want to hear it, hotter than Duval Street at noon in July. Din picked a great bass solo. Bobby, George and the 'G' man were solid as coral rock.
Another tune from Hugo's great CD, "I'll Be Gone" has the Nashville sound all over it. Hugo and Chris co-wrote it. I guarantee you'll love it. "Modern Day Buccaneer" is one of my favorite Hugo Duarte songs. The harmony is gorgeous, and Turner plays superb lead on this moving island song. Then we heard the wonderful tribute to Hugo's South Carolina childhood,
"Willie's Country Store." This one is killer funk with every player standing out, and the energy level at lift off.
Hugo debuted a Fred Knobloch song, "Three Verses" which he will use on his next recording. It is a number one song if I ever heard it. Ask for this one. Buy yourself a copy of Places Along the Road.
Hugo has hopes that "Havana Flamingo" will play on South Florida radio, so his relatives in Cuba, whom he's never met, can hear it. I hope so too. Hugo and Full Sail will be at Meeting Of The Minds in November. Head on down and hear them. It will make your day!
TIM FLANNERY
San Diego, CA
**************
flannery
The mention of the name Tim Flannery has been met with cheers in stadiums across the nation. Thanks to his musical inspiration, that range has been expanded to heart-warmed smiles, healed hearts, tears of remembrance and moments of grace that his music inspires.
Flannery is best known to sports fans around the country for his two decades spent with the San Diego Padres baseball team. Tim played with the major league team from 1979 to 1989 as an infielder. His fiery play and all-out style made him a fan favorite up until his retirement in 1989. Tim returned to the Padres as a coach in 1992 and has served as the third base coach for the past four years. Tim has played and coached in two World Series. All of this work that the world observed was, at the same time, privately accompanied by a musical life that the world is now enjoying in the form of Tim Flannery, musician.
Tim's touring was accompanied with a suitcase in one hand, guitar in the other. His passion for songwriting, documenting his feelings on the road, and the parallel lives of a sportsman and a musician have resulted in recordings and live shows that have left a path of empowerment for audiences fortunate enough to experience them. "I have always carried a guitar and have written songs during my twenty years on the baseball circuit," says Flannery. "The baseball life has provided some great material; I just never really let too many people in on it."
Folks started taking his love for music more seriously when his last record, Secret World was nominated at the San Diego Music Awards for Adult Alternative Album of the Year. Proceeds from the sale of the record were spent on bringing over 1,200 underprivileged children to Padre baseball games.
Tim has just released his third record, "Pieces of the Past," and this album has attracted the musical support of such musicians as Jackson Browne, Bruce Hornsby, Steve Poltz, Mick Hanly and Randi Driscoll. "This is a 'roots' album for me," says Tim. "I wanted to honor my Irish-Kentucky-Cherokee ancestors who have made up the very fiber of who I am. This CD was born out of a desire to communicate with my father, who had Alzheimer's."
It worked. Tim's father was able to sing the lines of the songs. Tim felt the importance of "recording our heritage and passing it down." Tim was voicing an unspoken, integral part of humanity. The beauty also lies in the destination of the CD's proceeds; the money provides Padres tickets to children who would otherwise not have been able to attend. "Pieces of the Past" is pure Americana, (as American as baseball, but much older) and poignantly links the connection of Native American/Celtic roots; honoring the cycle of life, the earth as our home and the unity of all things. Stay tuned and share in the spiritual integrity of the heroic journey of a man who is embracing his humanity, leaving sonic reflections in the scrapbook of the heart.
So here it is, a piece of history. Step up to the plate and add it to your collection.
